Amansara

Updated: Jun 13

Once a residence for guests of King Sihanouk, Amansara is a masterpiece of 1960’s New Khmer architecture just ten minutes from the entrance to Cambodia’s Angkor Wat Unesco World Heritage Site.

Set in spiritual Siem Reap, Amansara's manicured gardens, a tranquil spa, curvilinear pool and canopy of mature trees add to tangible tranquillity that inspired its name – ‘heavenly peace’.

Amansara Location

Amansara lies on the outskirts of Siem Reap, the cultural capital of Cambodia. The property lies ten minutes from the entrance to Angkor Wat, and is walking distance from the Cambodian royal family’s residence. Amansara is a 15-minute drive from Siem Reap International Airport.

Car transfers are complimentary; Amansara’s fleet includes two vintage Mercedes limousines.

Accommodation

Set in culturally rich Siem Reap, Amansara’s Suites offer a combined bedroom and living area which steps down into a light-filled bathroom with an island bathtub. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to a private garden courtyard with sun loungers, a reflection pond and, in 12 suites, a private plunge pool. Sandstone reliefs reference the famed ruins of Angkor temples just minutes away.

Courtyard Suites

Contemporary in style with a monochrome colour palette, Amansara’s 100 square metre (1076 square feet) Courtyard Suites carefully balance indoor and outdoor space, for seamless open plan living.

Finished in pale terrazzo and timber, the suites have a combined king-sized bedroom and living area which steps down into a light-filled bathroom with an island bathtub.

Ideal for guests seeking peace and seclusion, the private courtyard and reflection pond provides a calming space and a tranquil atmosphere for guests to enjoy.

Finished in pale terrazzo and timber, the suites have a contemporary design appeal, each with a king-sized bed alongside a spacious living area with sofa, writing desk and an informal dining space.

The light-filled bathroom invites guests to relax and reset, with twin vanities and a deep-soaking bathtub alongside a separate shower and toilet.

Dining

Whether savouring authentic Khmer cuisine in the Restaurant with its lofty rotunda, breakfasting on the deck of a village house amidst the temples, or sipping a cocktail on the rooftop terrace, Amansara offers both guests and non-residents one of a kind dining experiences revealing Cambodia’s multifaceted culinary heritage.

The Restaurant

The striking centrepiece of Amansara, the circular Restaurant opens onto two terraces – one overlooking verdant lawns and the other the main swimming pool. The all-day menu includes both traditional Khmer and Western cuisines, and guests are free to help themselves from the walk-in cheese and wine cellar, and the freshly baked cake selection in the elegant lounging area.

Khmer Village House

Set in a garden within the Angkor Wat World Heritage Site, Amansara’s Khmer Village House is a traditional stilted abode overlooking the 10th-century royal reservoir of Srah Srang.

An inspiring and culturally immersive setting, it is ideal for lazy breakfasts after exploring the temples, hands-on cooking classes and romantic candlelit dinners cooked over charcoal to the accompaniment of live music.

Roof Terrace

A serene space surrounded by the treetops of Amansara’s forested boundary, the Roof Terrace offers a seasonal venue for early or late evening drinks and cocktails, as well as private dinners. It is also a tranquil setting for yoga or quiet contemplation, especially at sunrise, followed by a private breakfast with birdsong as the only soundtrack.

Wellness and Fitness

Flanked by a tranquil reflecting pond and a 43-metre bas relief inspired by Angkor, the pathway to the Aman Spa is a journey into an environment of restorative calm. Here, time slows down, all is still, and the air is laced with the scents of fragrant fruits and flowers.

Delivered across four treatment rooms, the menu of therapies interweaves Khmer healing traditions with Aman’s own organic blends, soothing mind and body. Guests can choose between Amansara’s signature Apsara ritual, a therapeutic spa journey designed for women or explore Amansara's extensive menu of massages, beauty treatments and restorative therapies inspired by traditional Cambodian techniques.

A dedicated yoga and movement studio and equipped fitness centre is also readily provided for guests at Amansara.

Experiences

Amansara lies at the threshold of Angkor Wat – the vast, Unesco-protected ruins of the once-mighty Khmer empire – giving guests privileged access to the spiritual and historic riches of the world’s largest temple complex.

Amansara offers a variety of temple tours and customised excursions as part of our tailored guest experience. Several tours utilise Amansara’s own fleet of remorks (moped-powered trishaws), each with its own Amansara driver and English-speaking guide.

Capturing the atmosphere of the temple as the sun rises is our preferred way to present this magnificent monument. A 4:30am wake up call and prompt 5am departure from Amansara will allow you to arrive by remork with the first morning light as we head for the East Causeway.

Connected to the Mekong river system, the vast freshwater lake of Tonlé Sap is lined along the shore by villages of stilted wooden houses. Two Amanbala lake boats cruise the waters, introducing Aman guests to one of Cambodia’s most rich and valuable ecosystems, and a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Visit a local temple for a personal encounter with Cambodia’s Buddhist traditions. In a 15-minute private ceremony, one of the monastery’s monks administers a water blessing – pouring flower-infused water and chanting to purify the spirit. The ideal way to end a stay at Amansara with a lasting sense of peace.
